What were the Howlies doing on Groundhog's Day, all the way across the sea? What happens when they find a concentration camp? Was Steve's birthday really the 4th of July? All these questions answered and more, in the most utterly gorgeous fanfic you've ever seen. The characterization of Bucky, his family, and the other Howlies as real, human people is fantastic and thorough. There are so many good lines, every person gets a moment to shine. Rather than being dull, the historical context included adds more depth to the story, filling in the futures of the people they meet and the outcomes of the decisions they make. The author gives Bucky a distinct voice and a believable response to the unraveling world around him. He's terrified, screaming himself awake, and unreliable narrator, full of self-loathing, yet through his words you know, even if he doesn't, that he is still a fundamentally good person. It's funnier than it has any right to be, utterly heart-wrenching, and deeply, deeply human. Cannot recommend this highly enough.
